Exodus & Wilderness Ammon · H5747
Old Testament

Og was the Amorite king of Bashan who was defeated by the Israelites during their journey to the Promised Land.

Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaim, described as a giant whose iron bed measured nine cubits long and four cubits wide (approximately 14 by 6 feet) and was preserved at Rabbah of Ammon as a curiosity (Numbers 21:33–35; Deuteronomy 3:1–13; 29:7). He reigned over sixty fortified cities in the region of Bashan, east of the Sea of Galilee, and was defeated and killed by Israel under Moses in one of the final battles before the crossing of the Jordan. His defeat became a paradigmatic victory celebrated repeatedly in the Psalter (Psalms 135:11; 136:20) as evidence of God's power on behalf of Israel.
