Tattenai was the Persian governor of the province Beyond the River who questioned the Jews' authority to rebuild the temple.
Tattenai was the Persian governor of the province 'Beyond the River' (Trans-Euphrates) who, along with Shethar-bozenai, challenged the Jewish community's authority to rebuild the Jerusalem temple and wrote to King Darius to investigate the matter (Ezra 5:3–6:13). Unlike some opponents of the restoration, Tattenai conducted himself with administrative propriety, and when Darius confirmed the Jews' rights based on Cyrus's original decree, Tattenai complied and even supported the rebuilding effort. His name is confirmed in a cuneiform text from 502 BC identifying a 'Tattannu' as governor of the same region.
