New Testament

Tiberius was the Roman emperor during Jesus' ministry and crucifixion, mentioned in several Gospel accounts.

Tiberius Caesar Augustus was the second Roman emperor, who ruled from AD 14 to 37 and is mentioned explicitly in Luke 3:1, which dates the beginning of John the Baptist's ministry to the fifteenth year of his reign. As emperor during the entire public ministries of both John and Jesus, Tiberius represents the imperial political backdrop against which the Gospels unfold. He is also referenced indirectly in the synoptic Gospels through discussions of the tribute coin bearing 'Caesar's' image (Matthew 22:17–21; Mark 12:14–17; Luke 20:22–25).
