Tyrannus was a teacher in Ephesus who allowed the apostle Paul to use his lecture hall (σχολή) for daily discussions after Paul's withdrawal from the synagogue (Acts 19:9). Paul taught there for two years, and the Western text tradition of Acts adds that the lectures took place from the fifth to the tenth hour — the midday break when the hall would otherwise be unoccupied. Through this arrangement the word of the Lord spread throughout the province of Asia, making the hall of Tyrannus an important base for Paul's Ephesian ministry.
