Study Note

'Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.' Jesus quotes this verse in Matthew 26:31 and Mark 14:27, applying it to his own passion and the disciples' imminent desertion. The phrase 'my fellow' (amithy — my companion, the one close to me) is startling: the smitten shepherd stands in intimate relation to God — suggesting the suffering figure is no ordinary shepherd but one uniquely united with the divine. Christologically, the verse has grounded both the identification of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and the doctrine that his death was initiated by divine decision, not merely human conspiracy (Acts 4:28).
