Jeremiah 23:5
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

The promise of a 'righteous Branch' raised up to David introduces one of Jeremiah's great messianic oracles: a king who will 'reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.' The word 'Branch' (tsemach) becomes a technical messianic term, appearing also in Jeremiah 33:15, Zechariah 3:8, and 6:12, each time referring to the coming ideal Davidic ruler. The contrast with the failed shepherds of Jeremiah 23:1-4 is deliberate: where Israel's leaders scattered and destroyed the flock, this Branch will gather and save, anticipating Jesus's self-description as the good shepherd in John 10.
