God's instruction to Jeremiah 'take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations to whom I send thee to drink it' inaugurates one of the most comprehensive judgment oracles in the Hebrew Bible, covering some twenty-one nations in the following verses. The cup-of-wrath metaphor (also Psalm 75:8; Isaiah 51:17; Ezekiel 23:33) presents judgment as forced consumption — nations who refused God's word must now drink the consequences of that refusal to the dregs. Jesus' Gethsemane prayer ('let this cup pass from me') draws on this same tradition, suggesting that his death involves drinking the cup that divine justice prepared for human rebellion — substitutionary absorption of the judgment-cup. Revelation 14:10 and 18:6 extend the motif to the final judgment of Babylon, demonstrating the cup-of-wrath image's canonical reach across three testaments.
