Study Note
The image of drinking 'the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture (akratou, unmixed/undiluted) into the cup of his indignation' is one of Revelation's most intense judgment passages, deliberately contrasting with the undiluted wine of Babylon's seductive fornication (14:8). Ancient wine was typically mixed with water; unmixed wine was either the most potent or the most raw — the modifier 'akratos' signals judgment untempered by mercy, fully concentrated divine wrath. The torment before 'the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb' is theologically significant: eschatological punishment occurs within the divine presence, not in divine absence, raising profound questions about the nature of eternal punishment. The verse quotes Jeremiah 25:15-17 and Isaiah 51:17 — the cup-of-wrath tradition — showing Revelation's judgment scenes as fulfilment of prophetic visions.
