Study Note

The eschatological vision of Christ coming 'to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed on that day' frames the parousia not primarily as judgment but as the manifestation of Christ's glory in and through his transformed people. The idea that believers will be the medium in and through which Christ's glory is displayed is rooted in Isaiah 49:3, where Israel is the servant 'in whom I will be glorified,' and is developed in Romans 8:17-21 and Colossians 3:4. The phrase 'on that day' (en tē hēmera ekeinē) is a technical eschatological term derived from the prophetic 'Day of the LORD,' which the New Testament consistently applies to the return of Christ. The verse provides a positive, glory-centered motivation for present faithfulness under persecution (the context of verses 5-10).
