Hebrews 10:29
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

Study Note
The warning about the far greater punishment awaiting those who trample the Son of God underfoot, profane the blood of the covenant, and outrage the Spirit of grace rests on an a fortiori argument from the Mosaic law: if death resulted for those who violated the Mosaic covenant, how much worse for those who reject the superior new covenant? The three characterizations of the sin — trampling, profaning, outraging — are each deliberately extreme, describing not inadvertent failure but deliberate rejection after full knowledge. The verse belongs to the fifth and most severe warning passage in Hebrews (10:26-31), which theologians debate as describing the impossibility of repentance for apostate professing Christians or as a hypothetical warning to sustain genuine faith. The phrase 'the Spirit of grace' (pneuma tēs charitos) is unique in the New Testament and intensifies the offense: it is the Spirit who mediates grace that is here being insulted by the apostate.

of how much sorer punishment, think ye, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
of how much sorer punishment shall he be counted worthy who the Son of God did trample on, and the blood of the covenant did count a common thing, in which he was sanctified, and to the Spirit of the grace did despite?
But will not the man by whom the Son of God has been crushed under foot, and the blood of the agreement with which he was washed clean has been taken as an unholy thing, and who has had no respect for the Spirit of grace, be judged bad enough for a very much worse punishment?
