Study Note

The double imperative 'awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city' opens one of Isaiah's most exuberant restoration oracles. The garment-changing imagery (from mourning dress to festival attire) enacts the transformation of status: the humiliated holy city is re-clothed in the apparel appropriate to her true identity. Paul cites Isaiah 52:7 and 52:15 in Romans 10:15 and 15:21, and Ephesians 5:14 echoes 52:1 with 'awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you' — applying the Zion awakening to individual believers. The passage forms the immediate context of the Fourth Servant Song (52:13-53:12), connecting Zion's restoration with the Servant's suffering.
