'Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid' — the Farewell Discourse's peace-bequest distinguishes the shalom Christ gives from the conditional, circumstance-dependent peace the world offers. The Greek 'eirēnē' combines the Hebrew shalom's comprehensive wholeness with the New Testament's specific christological content — peace as the fruit of reconciliation with God (Romans 5:1) and the effect of the indwelling Spirit (Galatians 5:22). The contrast 'not as the world gives' (ou kathōs ho kosmos didōsin) implies that worldly peace is transactional, contingent, and temporary, while Christ's peace is covenantal, unconditional, and enduring. The verse has been formative for Christian spirituality: the peace that Christ gives is not the absence of conflict but the presence of the Paraclete (verse 26) in the midst of conflict.
