Study Note

Jesus' response to Nicodemus — 'Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God' — introduces the Johannine vocabulary of spiritual regeneration that has become central to evangelical theology. The Greek 'anōthen' is deliberately ambiguous, meaning both 'again' and 'from above,' and Nicodemus's confusion (how can a man enter the womb a second time?) exploits the literal meaning to create the misunderstanding that drives the dialogue toward disclosure. The Ezekiel 36:26-27 background — a new heart and a new spirit given by God — suggests Jesus is announcing the fulfilment of the prophesied new-covenant transformation of Israel. The verse became the watchword of the eighteenth-century evangelical revival, especially in Whitefield and Wesley, who preached it as the indispensable gateway to saving faith.
