New Testament

Anna, a prophetess and widow, witnessed the dedication of the infant Jesus in the temple and spoke about Him to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Anna was an elderly prophetess, daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher, who had lived as a widow for approximately eighty-four years after only seven years of marriage (Luke 2:36–38). She was a permanent resident of the temple, worshipping night and day with fasting and prayer, when Simeon recognized the infant Jesus as the Messiah. Anna gave thanks to God and spoke about the child 'to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.' Her life of consecrated prayer and her prophetic witness at the presentation of Jesus make her an emblematic figure of the faithful remnant of Israel who awaited the coming of God's redemption.
