Aretas, the king of the Nabataeans, governed Damascus and tried to arrest Paul.

Aretas IV was the king of the Nabataean Arabs, ruling from approximately 9 BC to 40 AD with his capital at Petra. He appears in 2 Corinthians 11:32–33 as the ruler whose governor in Damascus attempted to arrest Paul, necessitating Paul's dramatic escape through a window in the city wall in a basket. The Nabataean interest in Damascus may have been related to a period of Nabataean political control or commercial dominance over the city. Aretas had political conflict with Herod Antipas, who had divorced Aretas's daughter to marry Herodias—a marriage condemned by John the Baptist (Mark 6:17–18).
