Old Testament

Hezir was a priest who was assigned the 17th division of priestly service in the time of King David.

Hezir was the head of the seventeenth division of priests organized by King David for rotation of service at the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 24:15). The priestly divisions David established formed the liturgical calendar of temple worship and continued to structure priestly service into the Second Temple period. Hezir's name also appears among the signatories of Nehemiah's covenant of renewed obedience (Nehemiah 10:20), suggesting a post-exilic priestly family that preserved the name across generations.
