Old Testament

Hoshea, the son of Azaziah, was the leader of the half-tribe of Ephraim during King David's reign.

Hoshea son of Azaziah was the appointed leader over the tribe of Ephraim during the administrative organization of David's kingdom, one of twelve tribal officers listed in 1 Chronicles 27:20. David's establishment of such tribal leaders reflects his effort to govern the twelve-tribe confederacy through recognized clan heads. Hoshea of Ephraim should be distinguished from the more prominent prophet Hosea and from Hoshea the last king of Israel, who appear elsewhere in the Old Testament.
