Jesus' word to Peter — 'I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren' — is one of the most striking instances of anticipatory intercession in the gospels. The future tense 'when thou art converted' (epistrepsas) does not deny Peter's forthcoming denial but absorbs it within a trajectory of restoration and renewed vocation, redefining conversion as a return from failure rather than only an initial turning. Hebrews 7:25's declaration that Christ 'ever liveth to make intercession' for believers extends this particular prayer into a universal and ongoing ministry. John 21:15-17's threefold commission to 'feed my sheep' constitutes the fulfillment of the promise, showing that apostolic leadership is shaped by the experience of having been personally restored by grace.
