Old Testament

Shamgar, the son of Anath, was a judge of Israel who delivered the nation by killing 600 Philistines with an oxgoad.

Shamgar son of Anath was one of the judges of Israel who delivered the nation from Philistine oppression, remembered for killing six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad (Judges 3:31). He is also mentioned in the Song of Deborah (Judges 5:6) as a figure in whose day the roads were abandoned and travelers took to byways. His non-Israelite name and the unusual weapon suggest a figure on the margins of Israelite society who nevertheless became an instrument of divine deliverance.
