Study Note
'That they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth' — the Asaph psalm's climax frames the defeat of Israel's enemies not primarily as political relief but as an occasion for universal knowledge of YHWH's name and sovereignty. The psalm addresses a coalition of ten nations threatening Israel, making it structurally similar to the eschatological Gog-Magog tradition (Ezekiel 38–39) and the nations-assembled psalms (Psalms 46; 48; 76). The name YHWH, in its contrast to the nations' deities, is the epistemic goal of divine military action — the psalm's purpose is doxological, not merely nationalistic. The phrase 'Most High over all the earth' (Elyon al kol ha'aretz) identifies YHWH with the universal sovereign title used in Genesis 14:18–22 by the priest-king Melchizedek, linking Israel's covenant God to the highest divine epithet in the ancient Near East.
