Isaías 43:2
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

Study Note
The divine promise 'When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you; when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned' is set within Deutero-Isaiah's message of comfort to the exiles in Babylon. The water and fire imagery deliberately evokes the exodus and wilderness: the God who brought Israel through the Red Sea and the Jordan will again be present in the new exodus from Babylon. The promise is not exemption from trial but divine accompaniment through it — a nuance crucial for pastoral application, as the following phrase confirms: 'the flames will not set you ablaze.' Daniel 3's narrative of the three young men in the furnace has been read as a literal fulfillment of this promise.
