Study Note
'And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.' Jesus weeps over Jerusalem (verse 41) and pronounces devastation because the city 'knew not the time of its visitation' (ton kairon tēs episkopēs sou) — the visitation being Jesus's own coming as Israel's king and shepherd. The language echoes Jeremiah 6:6-8 and Micah 3:12's earlier destruction oracles, and the fulfillment in 70 CE — when Rome destroyed Jerusalem and the temple — is the event to which Luke's Gospel was already pointing. The verse illustrates the tragic dimension of rejected grace.
