Claudius was the Roman emperor during part of Paul's ministry.
Claudius was the Roman emperor (AD 41–54) during whose reign the church experienced significant growth and faced early persecution. He is mentioned in Acts 11:28 in connection with a great famine that occurred throughout the empire, and in Acts 18:2 as the emperor who expelled Jews from Rome—an event that brought Aquila and Priscilla to Corinth, where they met Paul. Claudius is also the Claudius Lysias of Acts 23:26, the Roman tribune who rescued Paul from the Jerusalem crowd.
