Salmaneser

Divided Kingdom Assyria · H8022
Old Testament

Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, besieged Samaria and conquered the northern kingdom of Israel, exiling its inhabitants and ending the kingdom's existence.

Shalmaneser V was the Assyrian king who besieged Samaria for three years after King Hoshea of Israel rebelled against Assyrian domination (2 Kings 17:3–6; 18:9–10). Though Shalmaneser is credited in Scripture with beginning the siege, he died before its completion, and his successor Sargon II claimed credit in Assyrian annals for the actual deportation of the Israelites that ended the northern kingdom in 722 BC.
