Mark of the Beast
A mark described in Revelation 13:16-18 that the beast forces upon 'all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark.' The number of the beast is 666 (or 616 in some manuscripts). Scholars have proposed numerous interpretations — from Nero Caesar to future technological systems. The mark contrasts with God's seal on believers (Revelation 7:3, 14:1). Whatever its specific form, the mark represents allegiance to a worldly power opposed to God. Revelation 14:9-11 warns of severe judgment for those who receive it.
