Pharisees
A Jewish religious party known for strict observance of the Mosaic law and oral traditions. The Pharisees appear frequently in the Gospels, often in conflict with Jesus over issues like Sabbath observance (Mark 2:23-28), ritual purity (Mark 7:1-13), and the nature of true righteousness (Matthew 23). Jesus criticized their hypocrisy — performing religion outwardly while neglecting 'justice, mercy and faithfulness' (Matthew 23:23). Yet not all Pharisees opposed Jesus: Nicodemus sought him by night (John 3:1-21), and Joseph of Arimathea provided his tomb (Mark 15:43). Paul identified himself as a former Pharisee (Philippians 3:5).
