Study Note

'The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever' — the seventh trumpet heralds the final transfer of sovereignty from the powers of this age to God and his anointed. The political theology is unmistakable: every human empire is provisional, and the ultimate horizon of history is divine kingship. The declaration echoes Psalm 2:2's vision of the Lord and his anointed, and its refrain 'for ever and ever' signals that this reign, unlike all earthly ones, has no terminus. Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, drawn directly from this verse, has become possibly the most recognized piece of Christian sacred music.
