'And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath' — the seventh bowl judgment brings the divine lawsuit against Babylon to its judicial climax: the city that made all nations 'drink of the wine of her fornication' (Revelation 14:8) now receives God's own cup of wrath. The reversal of the cup-motif — Babylon as cupbearer of seduction transformed into Babylon as recipient of judgment — follows the Jeremiah 51:7–9 and Isaiah 51:17 patterns of the wine-cup of divine judgment passed among the nations. The 'remembrance before God' formula (emnesthē) signals that divine judgment is not random but the outcome of perfect memory of accumulated injustice.
