'And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.' The third 'God gave them over' (paredōken) in Romans 1:24-28 describes divine judgment as the removal of restraint — sin's own consequence becomes a deepened captivity to sin. The phrase 'reprobate mind' (adokimon noun) literally means a mind that has failed the test of discerning right from wrong, the cognitive counterpart to the moral degradation of the preceding verses. Paul's analysis anticipates modern understandings of how self-deception operates: suppressing the knowledge of God progressively degrades the capacity for genuine moral reasoning.
