Study Note
Jesus's self-declaration 'I am the resurrection and the life' — spoken to Martha before Lazarus's resurrection — is the fifth of John's seven 'I Am' (ego eimi) sayings. The claim shifts resurrection from a future event to a present person: not 'I will resurrect you' but 'I am the resurrection,' relocating eschatology in the identity of Jesus. Martha's confident theological statement (verse 24: 'I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day') is not wrong but is expanded — resurrection is not merely a future event but a present relationship with the risen one. The subsequent raising of Lazarus functions as a 'sign' pointing to Jesus's own resurrection and its implications for all who believe.
