Study Note

'But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.' The first of seven (or eight) woes in Matthew 23 identifies the primary offense of corrupt religious leadership: preventing access to God rather than facilitating it. The contrast with Matthew 11:28's 'come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden' is pointed: Jesus opens what the scribes and Pharisees close. The term 'hypocrites' (hypokritai — actors wearing masks) is used six times in Matthew 23, targeting the gap between outward performance and inner reality as the defining flaw of this leadership.
