Azgad was the ancestor of 1,222 (or 2,322) exiles who returned to Jerusalem (Ezr.2.12; 8:12; Neh.7.17).
Azgad was an ancestral name associated with a large family group that returned from Babylonian exile: Ezra 2:12 lists 1,222 returnees bearing his name (Nehemiah 7:17 gives 2,322). Representatives of this family also returned with Ezra in the second wave (Ezra 8:12). His name, meaning 'God is strong,' became attached to one of the largest clans in the post-exilic community, testifying to the vitality of families who preserved their identity through decades of captivity in Babylon.
