Jehonathan was a Levite sent by King Jehoshaphat to teach the Book of the Law in the cities of Judah.

Jehonathan was a Levite sent by King Jehoshaphat on a teaching mission through the cities of Judah, carrying the book of the Law of the Lord to instruct the people (2 Chronicles 17:8). This educational initiative was part of Jehoshaphat's broader program of religious reform, which also included establishing legal courts in the fortified cities of Judah (2 Chronicles 19:5–11). Jehonathan's itinerant teaching ministry anticipates the later Levitical role of Torah instruction that became central to Jewish life in the post-exilic period.
