For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Study Note
Paul's redefinition of circumcision — 'we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh' — claims the covenant identity marker for those whose circumcision is spiritual rather than physical. The three positive marks (Spirit worship, Christ-boasting, flesh-mistrust) correspond to the three warnings against 'dogs, evil workers, those who mutilate the flesh' (verse 2), creating a direct contrast between the competing definitions of covenant identity. Romans 2:29 and Colossians 2:11 develop the same argument: the 'circumcision of Christ' is a spiritual reality that fulfills what the physical sign pointed toward. The verse is central to Pauline ecclesiology and to debates about the continuity and discontinuity between Israel and the church.
