Study Note

'Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded' — personified Wisdom's judgment-speech to those who rejected her calls (verses 20–23) mirrors prophetic lawsuit forms but extends the indictment beyond covenant Israel to all who have heard Wisdom's voice. The 'stretched out hand' is a divine gesture of both invitation and subsequent judgment (Isaiah 5:25; 9:12, 17, 21), and Wisdom's subsequent refusal to answer their cry of distress (verse 28) applies the principle that divine grace has seasons already encountered in Isaiah 55:6. Jesus's lament over Jerusalem in Matthew 23:37 ('how often would I have gathered thy children... and ye would not') directly echoes Wisdom's failed invitation in this passage.
