The reward for honoring the Lord with first-fruits and wealth — 'so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine' — represents the retributional theology of the agricultural sections of Proverbs. The first-fruits principle (honor God first with what he has given) appears throughout Israel's law (Exodus 23:19; Deuteronomy 26:2-10) as an act of covenant acknowledgment rather than commercial transaction. The verse must be read within Proverbs' general framework: it describes a pattern in the moral order, not an unconditional guarantee, and must be held in tension with the book of Job. Paul's 'he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully' (2 Corinthians 9:6) applies a similar agricultural-generosity principle to church giving.
