Study Note

Paul's description of Christ as 'propitiation' (hilastērion) through faith in his blood engages technical Jewish sacrificial vocabulary: hilastērion is the Greek term for the 'mercy seat' (kapporeth) in the Septuagint (Exodus 25:17–22), the locus of atonement on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16). The 'passing over' of former sins 'through the forbearance of God' addresses a theological question implicit in the Old Testament: how were pre-Christ sins forgiven if the sacrifice of Christ is the basis of forgiveness? — Paul answers that Christ's death retroactively validates the divine patience already exercised. The phrase 'to declare his righteousness' (eis endeixis tēs dikaiosynēs autou) identifies the Atonement as a theodicy event as much as a soteriological one: God's own justice is vindicated in not simply overlooking sin. The verse stands at the center of the theological landscape of Romans and of Christian atonement theology.
