The theological concept of reconciliation between God and humanity through sacrifice. In the Old Testament, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur, Leviticus 16) involved the high priest offering blood sacrifices to cover the sins of Israel. The New Testament presents Jesus as the ultimate atoning sacrifice — Romans 3:25 calls him a 'propitiation by his blood,' and 1 John 2:2 declares he is 'the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.' The book of Hebrews extensively argues that Christ's once-for-all sacrifice supersedes the repeated animal sacrifices of the old covenant.
