The elevation of material possessions and comfort above spiritual realities and relationship with God. Jesus warned, 'No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and money' (Matthew 6:24). The rich young ruler went away sad because 'he had great wealth' (Matthew 19:22). First Timothy 6:6-8 counsels, 'Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.' Luke 12:15 cautions, 'Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.' The church at Laodicea thought they were rich but were 'wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked' (Revelation 3:17). True wealth is found in knowing Christ (Philippians 3:8).
