The teaching that Jesus died in the place of sinners, bearing the punishment they deserved. Isaiah 53:5 prophesied: 'He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him.' First Peter 2:24 states Christ 'bore our sins in his body on the cross.' The concept appears in the Passover lamb (Exodus 12), the scapegoat (Leviticus 16:21-22), and Abraham's ram (Genesis 22:13). Paul summarizes it in 2 Corinthians 5:21: 'God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.'
