The global deluge God sent in judgment upon a corrupt world, saving only Noah, his family, and representative animals in the ark (Genesis 6-9). Genesis 6:5-7 reveals God's grief: 'Every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.' Noah 'found favor in the eyes of the Lord' (6:8) and obeyed God's instructions to build the ark. After the waters receded, God established a covenant with Noah, promising never again to destroy the earth with a flood, with the rainbow as its sign (9:8-17). Jesus compared his return to 'the days of Noah' (Matthew 24:37-39). First Peter 3:20-21 connects the flood to baptism. Second Peter 2:5 calls the flood an example of divine judgment.
