Study Note

'Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him' — Paul loosely cites Isaiah 64:4 (and possibly 65:17) to describe the eschatological mystery that transcends human sensory and imaginative capacity. The immediately following verse 10 ('But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit') is equally important: the verse is not about unknowability but about the Spirit's exclusive access to and transmission of the deep things of God. The passage grounds Paul's preaching of the crucified Christ in a Spirit-given wisdom that outstrips the Corinthians' own rhetorical sophistication and socially constructed categories of knowledge.
