Study Note

John's statement 'hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren' makes the cross the epistemological ground for knowing what love is (agapē) and the ontological ground for its community replication. The parallel structure is striking: God's self-giving for us becomes the measure and mandate for our self-giving for each other — cruciform love is both indicative (this is what love looks like) and imperative (therefore we ought to love this way). John 15:13 ('greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends') provides the dominical source of this principle. Paul's parallel in Romans 5:8 ('God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us') differs in that Paul emphasises the absence of prior worthiness, while John moves immediately to the communal implication of the cross.
