Study Note

'Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.' The image of a Roman triumphal procession (thriambeuonti) places Paul and his colleagues among the captives being led in Christ's victory parade — a startling reversal where apostolic suffering is reframed as participation in conquest. The 'savour' (osmē) of Christ that the apostles diffuse recalls the incense burned in such processions, making the spreading of the gospel a sensory as well as cognitive event. The passage set up the 'aroma of life' and 'aroma of death' paradox in verse 16, showing that the same gospel message has opposite effects depending on the receptivity of the hearer.
