Genesis 26:3

God's renewal of the Abrahamic covenant to Isaac — 'Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries' — confirms the generational transmission of covenant promise and the principle of patriarchal sojourning. The command to 'sojourn' (ger) rather than settle permanently defines the patriarchs as people of the promise who live on earth as resident aliens, not permanent possessors — a theology developed in Hebrews 11:13 ('strangers and pilgrims on the earth'). The motivation clause 'because Abraham obeyed my voice' (verse 5) introduces an element of Abrahamic merit as the ground of Isaac's inherited blessing, which Paul addresses in Galatians 3:14-18 by arguing that the promise to Abraham's 'seed' (singular, Christ) is the actual ground rather than accumulated obedience. The verse establishes the pattern of divine self-commitment preceding human response that characterises biblical covenant theology.
