Study Note
'The angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys; and in them let my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth' — Jacob's deathbed blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh contains the Hebrew Bible's first explicit reference to 'the Angel' as a personal redeemer figure (ha-malach ha-goel). The identification of 'the angel who redeemed me' as parallel to 'the God before whom my fathers walked' (verse 15) suggests the Angel carries divine identity — a datum for early Jewish and Christian angelomorphic christology. The verb 'redeemed' (goel) is the kinsman-redeemer vocabulary of Ruth and Leviticus, applied here to divine deliverance from all adversity throughout Jacob's turbulent life. The blessing of the two grandsons with the crossed hands (reversing birth order as in Genesis 27) continues the biblical pattern of divine choice overriding natural precedence.
