Study Note
Abraham's faith is defined by response to command without specific destination — 'he went out, not knowing where he was going' — presenting the Urfather of faith as one who acts on divine word alone before any fulfillment is visible. The Greek 'me epistamenos pou erchetai' ('not knowing where he was going') is an important qualification: Abraham's obedience was not calculated risk but pure trust in the character of the one commanding. The passage (11:8-19) shows that Abraham's entire life was structured by this forward-looking posture — sojourning in a foreign land, receiving Isaac as a type of resurrection, seeking a city 'whose designer and builder is God.' The verse has been the paradigm for Christian theology of faith as obedient response to divine call regardless of experiential verification.
