Study Note
God addresses Israel directly as 'my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend' — three relational titles that ground Israel's election in service, choice, and friendship. The designation of Abraham as God's 'friend' (Hebrew: ohev, beloved) appears here in the prophets and is echoed in 2 Chronicles 20:7 and James 2:23 ('Abraham was called the friend of God'). This is the first of the 'fear not' oracles in Deutero-Isaiah (41:8-13), where God assures the returning exiles that their foundational relationship with him through the patriarchs remains intact despite the devastation of exile. The servant identity given to Israel here is then concentrated in the individual Servant of Isaiah 42-53, read christologically in the New Testament.
