Study Note

'Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine.' The covenant at Sinai is framed as conditional ('if... then'), placing Israel's status as God's 'treasured possession' (segullah) within the covenant's obedience-blessing structure. The parenthetical 'for all the earth is mine' is theologically crucial: Israel's chosenness is not because God owns only Israel, but because the universal owner chooses to treat this people as his special treasure from among all peoples. 1 Peter 2:9's 'peculiar people' and Titus 2:14's 'peculiar people' deliberately echo this verse to claim that the church has entered this vocation.
