Study Note

'I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke' — God's indictment of Babylon introduces an often-overlooked counter-theme to divine judgment: the instrument of judgment is itself judged for exceeding its mandate. Babylon was authorized to discipline Israel but chose to annihilate rather than chastise, showing no mercy to the elderly. The theological principle embedded here — that human agents who execute divine judgment bear their own moral responsibility for the manner of that execution — has been foundational in Christian reflection on theodicy and the nature of divine permission.
